In recent decades much research has been done on play: what is play, what are the effects of play, ...
All researchers agree that play is an important element in the development of children. Young animals play, even fish are reported to play!
Play has become a broad concept. There are different types of play:
- First you have free play where you can fill in yourself the 'what' and 'how' (fantasyplay, recreational sports and games, improvisation theatre, improvise with music, creative activities, ...)
- Secondly you have play led by fixed rules (board games, computer games, sports ,...).
I focus primarily on the free play that includes the following characteristics:
- Free play doesn't have a goal, you play the game for the game, not to achieve or obtain something else.
- when play, you are totaly absorbed in what you do. Play is an intense activity.
- Play is spontaneous, active and enjoyable
- The game is separate from everyday reality, you create your own world when you play.
- Game is very relaxing
- Fantasy is involved in the origin of free play
- The game is run by the players, there are no rules on time, subject, limits, manner, ...
- This also requires a degree of flexibility: in playing you can quickly change activities.
- you play with your whole body, with all your senses.
You can already see that play is beneficial for children and adults. In playing you practice skills, your creativity is stimulated and your mind comes to rest because the stressful thoughts and concerns are pushed away.
When you play, you enter into what is called a 'flow': you are passionate about what you do, you completely forget yourself so you can relax and grow innerly. Play offers some healthy and happy experience.
In play you can find the silence ...
That's why I like to work with free play and especially fantasy play and creative work. Both in working with children and with adults.
